Success: First Things First
I ran across this the other day in my mailbox . . .
What comes before success?
Feeling awkward, dumb, and uncomfortable . . . kind of like when one first learns to walk . . .
- Was Oprah totally comfortable the first time she was in front of the camera?
- Did Rachel Ray screw up plenty the first time she was in the kitchen?
- Didn't Michael Jordan get cut from his high school basketball team?
Listen, being uncomfortable is part of the journey to success. It just is.
I can't stand when people confuse 'good uncomfortability' with "things aren't working".
They quit on themselves without giving themselves a real chance to succeed. It's not right.
Stephen King wasn't a world class writer when he started. Neither was John Grisham.
Remember this: Success is a journey from AWKWARD TO NATURAL.
From awkward to natural.
- You're awkward when you first start selling.
- You're awkward when you try marketing for the first time.
- Your awkward when you prospect on the phone the first few times (or more.)
This is NORMAL.
Remember: You don't have to get it right, you just have to get it going. Allow yourself to get through the uncomfortable stage. Push through. Experience the growth. You can DO IT. Then, you'll look back and see "It wasn't as tough as I thought."
It never is.
Woody Allen said, "90% of success is showing up."
