The left blogsmear (sorry --sphere) has been holding a funeral for Samantha Power: Obama Adviser Critical of Clinton Resigns.

"Critical" is a bit of an understatement: while it's debatable just how far HRC will go to win the nomination, it's perfectly clear how far some Obama supporters will go to tear down a member of their own party. To wit: Liberal Values thinks Samantha Power's only sin was that she spoke "The Truth" out loud and Kyle E. Moore's Comments From The Left Field backs him up.

Unfortuately, they're missing an important angle:

Thank God for true independents, like me. Partisan Obama fetishizers (like Liberal Values) can't seem to see more than 2 inches and 5 minutes in front of themselves.

I want Obama to get the nomination rather than HRC (only because he's the lesser of two evils, not counting McCain who's as big if not a bigger nanny-state statist than GWB or HRC and who thinks Dr. Strangelove is great working model for 21st Century U.S. Foreign Policy . . . given these choices who the hell else is there to vote for?) -- unlike LV however, true independents and libertarians are really kicking the Obama tires and looking under his hood 1) to make sure he's the best choice and 2) to try to influence him to become an even better choice -- but I digress.

Look -- Samantha Power, a High-Powered Harvard babe yes, but good riddance: Obama is more electable without her because independents, like me, don't like her world view (and Obama will get nowhere without us independents). "Gosh, why not?" you ask.

This is why:

Samantha Power once stated that she's committed to recapturing an interventionist spirit, and believed that Obama could lead the way: It's going to take a generation or so, she told Newsweek senior editor Michael Hirsh in an article for the Washington Monthly, to reclaim American exceptionalism. Power doesn't complain that America is too often the world's Policeman -- she instead laments that America has been neither the shining example, nor even competent meddlers" in the world's problems.

So, it that what Barack Obama offers the electorate — to be a more competent meddler?

(For more, see Christopher Preble's Barack Obama's American Exceptionalism for more discussion and questions about Obama's Foreign Policy Positions and why it worries independents and libertarians).

Ms. Power's gaffe was a blessing in disguise, and her departure -- a boost for Obama.

I'm feeling better about the guy already.
